  9. I warmly welcome everyone and I would like to invite you to first bigger tournament held in Wroclaw (Lower Silesia, Poland) In few short words: We will play 5 ITS scenarios in the course of two days. 300 pts/6 SWC. 10. Infinity Polish Championships, April 26-27, 2014, Ranger’s perspective (thanks a bunch Pierzasty - for translating. Great job!) In 2014 Poland has finally gotten a real Infinity Championships. The info had been posted way in advance so that everyone willing to come could organize their schedule. In the meantime some heated (sometimes searingly hot) debates continued about the rules, their creation and phrasing. The main bone of contention was the Spec-Ops format, which divided the community in half – the poll had exactly the same number of votes for and against, with a few abstaining. Meanwhile, the Warsaw team was working, not taking part in the conflict, but gearing towards the event organization itself. Organizing/ordering buildings, gluing and painting them, prize support, sleeping arrangements, transport and even a bar – all those things had to be arranged capital-side. The tournament had official blessing from Corvus Belli (the game’s publisher), as well as support from Wargamer (the Polish distributor), Spellcrow and Micro Art Studio. So much for the formalities, let’s get down to the meat of the matter. I’ve decided - I’m going! However, I still had to test the new ITS. I’ve had the chance to see the scenarios in the Pomerania, but they left me with a slight distaste. One way or another, the format was set, and my only options were to play it or not. The tournament would start at 9 AM in Warsaw, and me and the rest of the Cracow (my hometown) crew were still training on Friday, from afternoon till evening. We were probably the last group of players training so late. For the sake of completeness: I played MRRF with two lists, 2 combat groups each. One of them was based on a Metro link, two AD units and specialists, while the other was more offensively-oriented – a team of Loup-Garous, two Chasseurs, Briscard HRL, an HMG Moblot (ain’t that a freak? ), etc. I originally meant to play Acontecimento, but certain difficulties of the modeling/painting kind forced me to use the Merovingians, which I do not regret at all. Saturday, 3:30 AM, wakeup. Damn, only 3 hours of sleep (if tossing and turning could be called that). Three of us (me, Pietia and Encaitar) depart from the Cracow main train station; Kascer took the bus at 1 AM, so he was definitely still driving. The journey to Warsaw was lightning-fast and the capital welcomed us with rain and wind. At the end we were supposed to meet Bajdur, the legendary “Warsaw rager” (joke). He’d called us to tell that he’s a “large” guy (or even bigger) and “we’ll have no problem finding him” (seriously, his exact words). Using my intuition I locate an individual resembling that description. After a short lecture about the capital drivers’ road manners and some general conversation about the condition of Polish Infinity community, we arrive to Bemowo at 10. We say hi to the Pomeranian guys and the Chełm crew, meet a few new people from the Warsaw community, talk for a while about everything and nothing. With all those expected in place, the TOs loudly called us all to one room and read the pairings. FYI: When I’m writing about the left/right flank I always mean MY flanks, unless specified otherwise! I apologize to my opponents if I’ve made any mistakes here – when I’m playing I’m more focused on the game than which model was most/least expensive, or who survived when I thought he didn’t Pairing 1: Ranger vs. Noun (Lublin) Opponent’s army: Tohaa Scenario: Seize the Antennae Culprit’s psychological profile: „Usually I play another faction, but my buddy went abroad, so I took his artichokes” Man of the match: both HMG Metros. Crack shots even against camouflaged targets, in ARO too. Loser of the match: Intel. Rolled a 13 for WIP12 in the crucial moment of the game... eh, dice Let’s start. Noun digs in like a veteran, and it doesn’t seem that taking out his units will be easy. My first attempt is against the enemy Spec Ops (who’d failed the Infiltration roll and deviated, luckily towards his own DZ), but he bravely passes his dodges and ducks into a safe spot. In the middle of the table, near the right side, lurks a TO camo. My Paracommando FO is ordered to eliminate it, unfortunately I’m within 8" (good bye +3 BS bonus), plus I suffer the to-hit penalty. I miss and eat a mine in return, the Para remains standing... until the second burst, when she dies instantly to the next explosive. My Zouave FO leans out from behind a wall to exchange fire (with a sniper, IIRC) with predictable results – he receives a wound. However, MRRF starts counterattacking and the HMG Metro flawlessly puts long bursts into the enemy TO sniper and a HMG Chaksa. Noun retaliates by advancing his link-team (of Sakiels, I think), however he’s out of luck for the moment. The spitfire grunt gets critted by my HMG Metro’s ARO, the second guy snatches the central antenna, and the last one gets pinned by fire and ducks behind a wall. A Clipsos goes hunting on my right flank and IIRC he does kill someone, but finishes in the middle of an empty field because my opponent ran out of orders. The Metro link clears the pest so he doesn’t reach my backfield, the Chasseur tries to synchronize the antenna closest to me, but gets ARO-critted on the way. Bruant stands up and fires his Molotok, killing the enemy Sakiel (the one from the link-team). The Tohaa are almost broken, but I’d have to kill a few points more to end the game too quickly. My opponent can’t hurt my units easily, so he covers the antenna next to him with a second link, fails the WIP roll and decides to try again in ARO. A Baggage-Chaksa with an HFT blocks my way and falls only after the second burst. I also kill the last Sakiel, with Bruant IIRC. Almost at the same time, I aggressively advance my Metro link. The medic synchronizes the antenna on my side, then tries to heal the Zouave to get the classified VPs (and fails). The Briscard sniper supporting them from the roof tries to take down the enemy specialist on the Tohaa side, misses and gets wounded with a perfect ARO. Predictably, Noun ARO-synchronizes his antenna and rolls the highest possible success again. Last scene of the play: my link-team Intel runs towards the center of the table. The enemy Clipsos responds by placing two explosive surprises. My options are to run, tank the two ARM rolls and click the antenna, or fire a speculative shot and end my last turn. I choose the first option, get two mines to the face and roll 13 and 12 – the second roll was a point too low and the Shock ammo kills my Spec Ops. The WIP roll itself is a spectacular... 13, against the Metro’s WIP of 12. Clearly, putting points into everything else paid off. I agree with Noun that playing the third turn would change nothing, as he had no chance to reach my lines. That was a close battle, as the result shows. Result: Ranger 4 - Noun 6 Pairing 2: Ranger vs. Crespos (Lublin) Opponent’s Army: Haqqislam Scenario: Quadrant Control Culprit’s psychological profile: precision in every detail, or: a praise of the visible part of the liaison officer’s head Man of the match: Paracommando HMG. His mimetism allowed him to hide from Crespos! Loser of the match: there was a vicious fight for that place, but it was won by my Chasseur taking a back shot from a HMG Ragik Crespos magnanimously lets me start, himself choosing the sides (both were very similar). He came from the same city as Noun, and it was obvious that they’d trained hiding their units together I start with my female Chasseur, placing two mines in the midfield. There seems to be an unexpected chance to try a Saladin assassination with my second Chasseur perched on high stairs, but after a closer look we agree that ¼ of a head is “not visible” I decided that I’ll wait with loosing the HMG Para from his leash. Crespos seemed to sense the opportunity and “in exchange” for my sportsmanship drops an HMG Ragik onto me, first killing the Loup-Garou guarding my backfield, then exploiting a bad Chasseur placement to put half a mag into her back, finally eliminating the Intel. Only a ton of glue from the next Loup’s ADHL stops his killing spree. (BTW, that attack was preceded by a chain Muttawi’ah who’d thinned my link team) Everything happened on the left side of the table. There’s another warband attacking from the right, he gets wounded by one of my units shooting from half the table away. The right-flank attack continues with a Farzan or Al’Hawwa (more likely the Farzan), who gets fed an ADHL candy and freezes. Crespos continues by landing a BS Bashi Bazouk from the right. A small commotion ensues and I lose my Briscard, but the Moblot securing him kills the Holo-masked attacker, only to fall to... an HMG Djanbazan. An eye for an eye, Bruant drops camo in his next turn and lets loose on the Djan, not leaving him any chances (multiple hits and a crit). A shootout worthy of Westerns. After the first turn I have 1:1 VPs in area control. I take a desperate decision because I’m running out of orders – I land the HMG Para and move him towards Saladin, hidden behind some container crates in the Haqq DZ. A Tuareg hidden behind some carriages on the left tries to save his commander; a short exchange of bullets gets unresolved, with the Para still advancing. With his last order he runs in with no cover at all and lets loose on the liaison officer. Damn, only one hit! Saladin gets a wound but is still alive due to NWI. Well, that was that. Next turn Crespos increases his advantage by spreading his living units around the table, at least where there are holes in the MRRF defense. Dude got carried out and forgot one little detail. The detail in question stood a few inches from his LT with an HMG ready to fire, and couldn’t miss on the start of my third turn. I hoped that the Merovingians would exploit the advantage, since Crespos would close the game with 2 orders. I target the Tuareg, but the dice quickly dash my hopes and my Para lies wounded. The Loup-Garou offensive is unimpressive as well and ends quite soon. Crespos can’t do much, so we end the game and count the quadrants. One of them seems quite popular – 21-point unit against my Chasseur. Which one? I think it’s a 2:2 tie, but I quickly realize my mistake and check the lists. What a rotten luck! That wasn’t the 22-point Chasseur, but a 20-point one! I’m one point short again, if not on a roll (see game #1), then in area domination. We congratulate each other on good sportsmanship and I consider it a very good game, even though I lost by a lot. Result: Ranger 1 - Crespos 8 Pairing 3: Ranger vs. Venator (Warsaw) Opponent’s Army: Nomads Scenario: Lifeblood Culprit’s psychological profile: nice and matter-of-fact, but no-nonsense and stoic Man of the match: Zouave. Waited the whole battle two steps from the center to have his 5 minutes of glory shooting with an assault pistol Loser of the match: Paracommandos! I didn’t let any on the table because they had no entrance points I don’t know why, but even before the tournament I felt that I’d face Venator (a member of the same forum mod team) It came true. We get a “boarding action” table, with Zero-G terrain outside the DZs. The crates land like potato beetles – very precisely, almost on top of each other. No big deal, Venator takes the initiative and masterfully blocks the only two AD entrance points near his DZ, so I switch to positional combat. First turn sees a Morlock charge, my Intel’s death (right flank) from a chain rifle (two other Metros survived the same attack) and a cheeky Intruder sniper killed by a crit from one of the “easy French victims”, followed by the fatal ministrations of a friendly doctor. I check two boxes with my trusty Chasseur on the first turn. Dozer trying to kill the second Morlock ends with both of them unconscious, so I can’t reach box #3, near the center of the table. Paradoxically, my paramedic manages to heal Valery the Spec-Op, giving me another big VP. Venator reveals a second Intruder (with an HMG), who cuts my original link team down to size. Shortly later I lean out with my HMG Metro and hit him...critically. He dies near the entrance to side corridors, in the middle of the table. I destroy both crates. Venator catches my defensive link with some unit I don’t remember, which I kill with Loup’s Viral ammo. A moment later Lupe hits the Metro team with her Panzerfaust, leaving only the ex-link leader alive. Right-hand corridor on MRRF’s side is unprotected. On my left, Nomads run to grab the boxes, and with his last order for the second group Venator rolls high VIP and gets nothing. He’s in a hurry because he has only one EXP missile, and two crates checked by a Zero. I try to tie her up with my Chasseur, to waste her orders. Venator kills my infiltrator with a combi, then shoots the Panzerfaust and...lacks the range bonus, Lupe was standing too close. No time to fret, Zouave appears behind her backs and dispels her dreams, following by blasting half a clip of his assault pistol into the Zero lying behind the crates, and finally checking my third box on the last order. A good, meaty battle. Result: Ranger 9 - Venator 0 (or 1) End of day one. A conversation with the Lublin-Lodz company shows that they too are boarded in an unspecified hotel. Lublin opts to play some board games, so a 6-person taxi is out of the question. 3/4 of the Cracow crew goes along with half of the tournament players. [to Alkasyn: that wasn’t 7 minutes away from the school, but we know how it is, huge Warsaw means it’s far everywhere... ] We go into a small bar, Garran takes a phone call which (judging from the audible parts) must’ve gone something like this: Hi, where are you, we’re joining you Errrr, in a bar Which bar, dude? There’s like a million of them here ... A moment of consternation, Garran nervously looks around, gives up and asks Baldy and Darek: guys, what’s the bar we’re in? Baldy has an epiphany and shoots in an ARO: it’s a bar called OPEN (that’s what a huge placard on the front said). Everybody falls in laughter, and Garran continues his call with a serious face: We’re in OPEN, and you? That’s what the evening looked like. Chill, filled with talks about the game, lists and players, with no needless bragging or pressure, just praising our favorite units, sharing curiosities about rule interpretations or upcoming sectorials. We chatted a bit about Baluty and Limanka (parts of Lodz city), studying IT and life in general. Beer flowed freely, one pizza after another entered the table, and sometime around 10 PM everyone got a complimentary drink with Zubrowka (polish vodka). However, me, Encaitar and Pietia had to go back to the school we played in and move our stuff to the “barracks”. A long walk and we finally see the hostel! Next to the front desk we meet Misiek, whom we just talked with. Short formalities are over and we go to our rooms. As it turns out, getting separate inexpensive accommodation was a great idea; a warm shower and a comfortable bed does wonders to our energy levels. The next day hit us with a wall of rain like a swarm of locusts. We go back to the tournament, I forget my towel and arrive a bit late, while my friends reach a local restaurant to sample the breakfast menu. Day two: Pairing 4: Ranger vs. Ghost (Pomerania) Opponent’s army: Neoterra (PanOceania) Scenario: Supplies Culprit’s psychological profile: “I’m playing against Ranger? I knew it yesterday” Man of the match: Chasseur FO, who carried the box with a noteworthy determination Loser of the match: Paracommando FO: grand aims, grand mission, lousy ARM/BTS roll Just a battle. Maciek’s playing a 16-order list and takes the deployment; I place my hopes on using the first turn advantage. My Chasseurs are in place and grab two boxes, but the Blue link team keeps a watchful eye on the table. The female Chasseur goes upstairs (but can’t afford an order to recamo), while her male friend crawls behind a building in the middle. I have a great idea how to open Maciek’s left flank (Deva hacker, link team upstairs, Palbots), but plans tend to fall apart. Paracommando FO gracefully finds a place to enter, but firing on an exposed Deva ends with a ridiculously low BTS roll against the Nanopulser ARO and a meager result of the Para’s attack. Situation turns to worse, and the Katyusha just started to warm up... Maciek counterattacks and takes one marker, flaming my female Chasseur (I took down the bot). My second infiltrator was about to follow (or would, if Maciek didn’t run out of orders). I remove myself after killing the Auxilia operator with my Dozer. Unfortunately, I lose my Zouave FO on the third box (the one on my right). It was a dream ARO: a DEP shot hitting a Deva hacker on 15 and... I roll a 16, and get wasted by combi fire. The package goes to the PanOceanians. This is followed by an enemy raid of a spitfire Hexa killing my Dozer, roughly in the middle of my zone. The same enemy turns his back to my HMG Metro, which means I can’t miss. Ghost sends his Deva to get my Chasseur, but the situation repeats itself – out of orders. I jump down from the building with my Intel and go around the enemy hacker to fill him with T2 ammo. Four wounds and... a box falls out. I totally forgot that this was the unit with the precious package. Counting the orders afterwards I calculated that I had no chance to reach it with my Intel, but I could place a Suppression Fire corridor, or at least a chain rifle. Now all Maciek had to do was to get someone else and grab the box. This is how the game ended. Result: Ranger 1 - Ghost 6 Pairing 5: Ranger vs. Sambor (Wroclaw) Opponent’s Army: Qapu Khalqi (Haqqislam) Scenario: Frontline Culprit’s psychological profile: “let’s play for fun, others will take the prizes anyway” Men of the match: Loup-Garou ADHL for a brave fight with a spitfire Odalisque, HMG Paracommando because he didn’t go a step too far Loser of the match: no one! Sambor’s the opponent I’ve had the most fun playing against. By the time we’ve chosen sides, deployed and chatted about like 5 different subjects, we’d wasted...45 minutes. After the first turn (which I started) we were left with only 35 minutes! But don’t think that we wasted all the time chitchatting, area-control scenarios have their own laws. Both sides dig in, but Haqqislam takes the side with an almost-fortress (topped with a mixed Djanbazan-Hafza-Spec Ops link). The enemy list also includes: an Odalisque, a Yuan Yuan, IIRC an engineer, an Alguacil, Nasmats, an ADHL Kaplan and two hackers. I start the game by landing my HMG Paracommando on the right and discovering a camoed Al Hawwa hacker. An order later he’s dead, one of the Loups discovers camo #2 and the situation repeats itself. The second Hawwa ARO-scans my Para for a VP. A moment later a Yuan Yuan lands behind me, almost symbolically deviating a mere 2.5", but enough to take 2 shots from a sniper and one from a viral rifle. The Odalisque runs along my left flank but gets stopped by an ADHL-ARO attempt from a Loup. Not successful (she keeps passing tests), but the stalemate lasts for 3 spitfire bursts and doesn’t let the Odalisque closer. My Chasseur, hiding in the middle (on the roof on the left) marks the Alguacil, is marked in turn a moment later, which makes it 2:1 for Sambor Eventually, Djanbazans leave the fortress and claim the middle of the table with practiced ease. I strike from the right with my Commando and kill the Spec Ops glued to a wall with Climbing+ (linked). The Commando continues his killing spree and only a critical Dodge success saves the Odalisque from harm. The fight on the right is joined by the Moblot, eliminating the Djan doctor, crouched high on the stairs, with his HMG. A moment later my grunt’s forced march gets interrupted by a whole four AROs. I push Bruant to the middle of the table (on the left), hoping to remain undiscovered. Unfortunately Leon gets hit, a pity as he carried D-Charges for the sabotage objective. Finally, the Odalique takes down two of my Loups and I move the right Briscard to the building to reinforce the first area. Wacu runs in with a megaphone and demands results. Not bad, as expected we’ve played two turns each. We mark zones and start counting points. OK, a point each for the closest one. The Odalisque came a bit too close, but I still have point domination, so no big deal. I measure my Para’s position, being convinced he’s in Sambor’s zone, while actually he’d stopped just before the 28" line and contests the middle, which is a very welcome news for the MRRF! Nearby, two Chasseurs against two Djanbazans. The Hafza following them was just half a step behind and did not count towards that zone. Ariadna takes the second quarter and after totaling the classified VPs with the area control ones I take the victory, as much as it can be said in ITS Result: Ranger 5 - Sambor 3 Awards: Sosna, Dorian, and Alkasyn speaking. Every player took at least a blister and a pin, and the lucky winners took whole boxes home. Congratulations to the top players, my only regret is that Cracow didn’t place higher (except Piotr), just like the Pomerania. Epilogue: A very successful event. I placed in the second half, but it’s still not bad seeing the scale of the event and well-prepared opponents. First time I’ve played with so many models. The most important thing for me was to have fun and play someone else than my usual rivals – objectives achieved on that front. I also met many players whom I’ve only known before by forum. It was great to see so many painted armies on the table! And last but not least, the pride that we’ve taken part in the biggest Infinity event in the world outside Spain. That’s right. The record didn’t go to the USA, Russia or Germany, but to Poland and we’ll try to hold onto it as long as possible POWER! Special thanks to: -event organizers, for a lot of work evident in the event, from tables and chairs to a hot water kettle and catering contacts -judges (also the „reserve” ones) for instant decision-making -sponsors, because we wouldn’t have as many prizes without you -opponents, but especially Sambor for closing the two-day tournament with an excellent battle to be remembered -Lodz, because without you half the tables would be one big jungle with no buildings -Encaitar, KasCer and Piotr for a well-planned trip and the Friday training, as well as being a worthy representation of Cracow’s community -Bajdur for driving us directly to the tournament, which allowed us to get there on time -those I could learn something from and with whom I had a great time Regards!
