Cloak's Painting Log: Aleph (163-5-2016: Eudoros and wip)

Those pics are a little blurry, but that's a cool heavy gradient shading style you've got going. Any shortcuts there, or just a lot of blending & layering?

@SpiralingVadaver

Yes the pictures are unfortunately a bit blurry. i'm working on improving my skills on that front, but its quite difficult to get the whole model to pop up in focus. The depth of field of my camera doesn't seem to be up to the task. Especially if there are multiple models in the picture.

As for the shading. I'm afraid most of it is layering, though a neat trick is to pick a medium color. Screaming skull (GW) for the aleph, Wash it(sepia/ brown mix) and then blend it back to the original color. This gives a nice medium shade. To increase the contrast i added additional layers of highlight (screaming skull/ white and pure white) to increase the contrast. Overall the wash, original color and the highlight give and relative quick blend.

The only addition is that it is key to getting the blend smooth is to keep the paint thin and release your brush at the point you want most of the paint to settle. Multiple layers of sweeping strokes in the same direction should give you a nice even blend.

@Michael Bishop: thanks  :)

Awesome shades! What is/are the "cream" colours?

The cream color is painted mainly with GW "screaming skull" washed with a 2/3 gyphon sepia 1/3 devlin mud, thinned with lamiha medium (GW) to get the shade. From there the screaming skull is brought back and then hing lighted with 50/50 screaming skull and whit. Lastly there is a final highlight with pure whit.

To get these effect i used a blending method as described in my painting pledge post

hope this helps.

The blending is awesome. Thanks for the link on how you did it. Going to have to give it a go sometime soon.

Your welcome and good luck :D.

For now just a quick update. I got some work done, but my study workload is really picking up.

So for the foreseeable future this will mean rather limited painting time.

Hence the early start on my painting pledge.

Colour me impressed Cloak!

The soft tones work really well on the Aleph models. Had a look through your terrain log as well, and I'm envious of the amount of MDF stuff you have. :)

The slightly shorter barrel works well on the sniper, looks decidedly less syringe-y now. Huge fan of the brown pants on your JSA. btw.

Incredible! Good luck at the tourney. You don't happen to have a palette or step by step with color selection for those models do you?

Thanks for the support.  :D

And no I don't really have any sort of Step-by-Step, but it would be kind of fun to do one. :huh:

As it turned out i need a little more firepower in my list so i was thinking of the spitfire Asura of Nesaie Alke.

So let me see what i can put together (though i first got to finish my April ledge)

Just finished my third Keisotsu Butai.

He went quite well. The gun came out really nice, but i'll need some time improving faces.

Just a few mistakes that need fixing though, just as i was taking pictures i noticed some more mistakes that'll keep bugging me till i clean them up.  :side:

Anyway pics!

And for those who happened to be interested...

Yes i'm going to do a step-by-step.

I need an Asura spitfire and this is as good an excuse as any to paint her.  :D

So here's a first look.

I've loved the posthumans since they came out and your paintjob does them justice, Cloak. Spot on.

Looking forward to seeing where you take that Asura, I dig that model as well.

Also, how do you do the white on the missile launcher? Is it just a light grey basecoat and then glaze up to white, or am I missing some magic trick? :)
