SAA Starter box - how to build upon

19 posts in this topic

So the new starter box for SAA has me very intrigued.  There's a fair bit to be said about the SWC content for a starter box so this thread could probably use suggestions for both proxy options and the wysiwyg approach.

My question to the PanO players is, with keeping 'buying efficiency' at its best, where could we be looking to expand upon this particular starter box please?

Given that we need more than four Regulars I'd get another ASA starter and convert it a bit.

Bagh-Mari box, Rao, Scylla/Drakios box, Nagas, Support Pack and basic remotes are other essentials.

Well hopefully there'll be a Hacker/LGL pack soon.

Hopefully either in a pack with a Sensor/Minelayer or followed quickly thereafter.

Thanks for your replies so far :)

@Stiopa When you say 'basic remotes' you mean the Mulebots or ?  My concern when reviewing your 'essentials' list is that by the time you add it all up, most of the new starter pack becomes irrelevant.  Think I must have over-calculated, but those essentials with a single starter add to around 450+ points...  Maybe this is the first time a starter pack isn't the right place to start the sectorial?

I'm wondering if a Father Knight might make for a good second Montesa proxy?

@infyrana: Ah, I think we simply have a different view what 'essentials' are. I consider them to be those things that will find their way into my lists most often, while if I'm not mistaken you just want to know what to add first to have a usable 300 pts list?

Father-Knight is a good proxy for any knight, even if it has 1-2 ARM more then anybody else.

The SWC cost of the starter, combined with the fact that only some of the range has been resculpted, makes purchasing decisions a little difficult for SAA, I agree. So while my gut initially says things like "another regular to flesh out the 4 men link" and "another Montessa if you want to run them duo" the fact remains that we simply don't know if any further SAA releases are planned, and if so, what. I'd personally hate to pick up such models only to have a resculpt drop on me, but I know that isn't a consideration for everybody so take that as you will.

With that in mind, I'd say a few things make solid and easy purchases. Just about every Pano Remote gets used pretty often, so any of those boxees would be a sensible place to start, especially the Dronbot variety who arguably boast the most overall utility if you're only looking to grab one. Aleph choices are also a pretty safe bet, as is the Trauma Doc/Machinist box if you like those sculpts as we're probably stuck with them for quite a while, and they're unique specialists in SAA.

As to the actual SAA models themselves, Bagh Mari box (+Rao if you like him, HMG Bagh also is likely worth a nod but an older sculpt) gives you a decent 5 man link for a second list, and the new Tikbalang sculpt is gorgeous if you can get your hands on one (split the Uhlan box, or win this season's event to get Eduardo, the alternate model!).

That should be plenty to play with really,  and then you can decide how patient you want to be to wait and see for more releases :).

Corvus Belli made it that this new Montesa looks like he had same armor as FK (although there is difference in 2 ARM).

@Stiopa I think you sorta hit the nail there.  I appreciate fully where you're coming from and know that down the line my OCD in collecting will probably see me buying most things to allow flexibility.  But since I'm already in the middle of that problem with other Sectorials, I've been trying hard to limit myself to minimum and 'wise' purchases :)

Glad to hear that I wouldn't be too out of sorts if using the Father Knight as a proxy until a second Montesa is released.

@Lazarus0909 Ah so the Dronbot box gets the better of the recommendations?  I'll make a note of that cheers.  I'm not a fan of Rem's at all in honesty, but if it pulls together the list, I'm a lot more open to suggestions.  Do you guys find that it's quite acceptable to proxy one Rem / bot for another rather than buying every box option?

Hey, there's no right or wrong approach here ;) And I fully understand the need to restrict purchases, what with my pokemonitis and everything... :P

In this case I'd probably go this route:

6 SWC | 300 Points

Open in Infinity Army

- Starter

- Spec Ops (to fill the Regulars link)

- Dronbots

- Peacemaker

- Montesa with Combi (or the Father-Knight you've mentioned)

- Naga hacker

- Naga Mono

This gives you four specialists, three pootential Lieutenants, strong presence in the middle of the board (something that ASA excels at, really), AD backup, flexible light fireteam and plenty of firepower to protect it all.

Now that's a good looking (and efficient) use of the starter pack and additions - thank you!  :)

The Spec Ops is definitely a valid inclusion for purchases - I'd think that with the Auxbot from the Peacemaker you could easily re-use them together for the Guarda De Assalto as an example.

One question @Stiopa, why not get the Bulleteer remote box as well or in the place of the Peacemaker? I'm also looking to get into ASA but held off buying anything until the new starter comes out.

I see no problem with it. Proxying will help you with future remote purchases in case you end up liking a certain remote. Try before you buy is the name of the game and other players shouldn't be unreasonable with you wanting to try the different laodouts/units before spending your cash.

Because Peacemaker works well with Montesas and Nagas, adding another unit that deploys in the middle and guards the flank. Its Repeater gives additional range to Naga hacker, which helps to guard the HIs against enemy hackers.

Bulleteers are superb assault units, but I think they're better with Spitfires, which give them more range and make keeping away from templates and shotguns easier. In the above example there's simply not enough SWC for this.

I agree that the Peacemaker works particularly well with Montessa+Nagas.

Bulleteers are another good option, which any PanO player will want to have available 'though.

What's resculpted in the new starter, and what's not?

Regular + combi, regular + combi, regular + Spitfire, regular + sniper?, akali + hacker, montessa + spitfire

I'd second the value of the peacemaker. It's hard to cram a bulleteer into the list, but even a shotgun peacemaker adds to a very decent table control list.

Mid field Repeater. When you have camo KHD available and good assault hackers to stop HI/TAG advances, having that Repeater there is so helpful. Plus it can defend itself. And camo hunt. It's a toolkit.

Yeah, I'm super keen to get them into play myself.
