After deciding on the main starter I finally picked it up yesterday alongside Van Sant and 112. Good start so at about 200 points.

I also played the first three missions so had a small taste of what I like in the game. Drop troops were good, infiltrators impressed me an I learned about camo. Sadly the technological kind but nothing I couldn't apply to someone in a fake tree or dressed like a cow.The next model I should need I suspect is a dozer. What else are 'essentials' I should pick up? Something heavy and suppressive. Anything else?

I take it your playing USAriadna? If that's the case than I'd recommend the Grunt special weapons box and the Dozer, Foxtrot, and Airborne Ranger blisters. depending on how much you want to spend I'd say wait a bit before deciding whether you want to buy the Marauders (when they come out) or Mavericks. any other questions?

I'm mildly drawn to USAriadna but not beholden. More than happy at this stage to use Kazaks etc. Can I only take the TAGs in sectorals?

I recommend not getting Scarface. He will only be available temporarily for the next year.

If going for USA,I'd get a grunt SWC box to give you some special weapons.  Maybe see if you can snag an army box as well. You may want the duplicate marauder and minuteman. Plus the Devil Dog and Maverick.

I believe that TAGs are accessible in everything now it just affects who you can get. If you want a TAG I'd say get Annie, she's more widely available this tournament season and is still usable in FRRM afterwards,

and since you're not decided on USAriadna its a little trickier to offer buying advice, got any playstyle your aiming for? otherwise my advice would be "buy what looks neat" it won't steer you terribly wrong.

There are a good amount of "Heavy and Suppressive" guys on Ariadna. Probably the most iconic is the Spetznaz HMG. Veteran Kazak AP HMG is a pretty good choice as well. The (unreleased) Blackjack AP HMG does pretty well.

For that role you want your opponent to know it is coming. That's the suppressive bit. Most of Ariadna is deliberate, unexpected and precise, but the Kazaks bring some stuff to make them cower.

I don't know any "required" roles, not even that one. Are there any models you are particularly interested in?

The things that drew me to Ariadna in the first place was Werewolves, Minutemen and firemen. Then Van Sant. Then camo markers.

I guess I won't get to any tournaments so it probably is just a case of what I like. In which case see above. More para troopers, the unknown ranger sound good. I guess the foxtrot sniper too.

Has anyone used one of those full squads of antipodes?

Well with camo markers choice number one is definitely Merovingian Chasseurs, way too good for twenty points everything else has their niche but we certainly have a camo unit for every occasion.

Never used the assault pack personally but it seems fun, a little tricky to use but fun.

I use whatever I want in tournaments anyways. Most people do.

Antipodes are good. I haven't used them since I don't play much Ariadna but people do.

So here's what I suggest:

Pick a wolf or 2. Whichever. My favorite is the Devil Dog, but they are all good.

Either get a Minuteman single or wait for a model to come out. These guys are good in Vanilla, don't worry. My favorite one by far is the AP rifle.

Get 1-2 different drops to start with. Because of Parachutist rule, you will probably only want 1-2 at the same time. Paracommando is good, my favorite is the HMG although the cheap specialist is common. Airborne are a bit more advanced, my favorite is the SMG. Spetznaz Airdrop profiles are both pretty great.

Grab the Foxtrot sniper and Unknown ranger once his model comes out.

For camo you have a ton of choices. Just find some things you like. A few good to start with is Scout, Chausser and S.A.S. For some more fire support, maybe a Spetznaz HMG or Tankhunter AP HMG/Autocannon.

But these are all just suggestions. If there is something you don't like just forget it, and if there is something you do, add it in. I just want to help narrow since there are so many options.

As for price, just prune until it is in your budget.

Antipodes are amazing. 25 points gets you 3 Antipodes and the Controller, who is basically a Line Kazak with a Smoke Launcher (which is VERY helpful).

I've seen them described here as furry cruise missiles, and with good reason. They're great at dealing with units with which Ariadna typically strugges - speciflcally camo and tough TO units. Because they have Sensor, they reveal enemy units on a VERY forgiving roll, and because they do their killing in CC, they don't care about enemy models' Camo or ODD. They're also fantastic against TAGs. Having Camo really helps them reach their intended target relatively safely. If you can get all 3 into B2B with an enemy model, you're doing more damage (17 AP) than any other model in the game AFAIK, at B3.

At only 25 points, they're pretty much an auto-include for me, especially since the Controller nets you a Smoke Launcher which is great for covering your button-pushers.

No, an Assault pack is AVA 1, dog-face/warriors, Devil Dogs etc. have a shared AVA of 2  so you can take two of any kind you want but only two.

You can take two Dogface (Werewolf) units/troops. The Antipode Assault Pack is not limited by that rule. Only the Cameonians, Dog Warriors, Devil Dogs are effected.

Also, do you live in the continental US? if so then this site will be of great help in buying your army on a low budget:http://www.gamenerdz.com

Miniature Market is another good site for saving money on minis, board games and other hobbies. They also ship anywhere in the world and their shipping cost is good:http://www.miniaturemarket.com

I'm in the UK and get a discount at my flgs so I am all set.

Oh so that means I can take two devil dog teams? Something to bare in mind for future.

My local group are starting slowly but the Haqqislam player has 300 points so I'd like to match that. To the army builder!

Devil Dogs have AVA of 3 in USARF and AVA of only 1 in Vanilla.

Oops. Good catch (fetch!). I'll hold off on more until I specialise. Although I think everything I have is USARF anyway at the moment.

I would go with the USAriadna Army Box and use the Devil Dog model included in that one. It can be used as both loadouts so you can test each one out. The model is generic enough to proxy as other Dogface units so you can try before you buy.

This all leads me on a wild idea and a new thread! Pun intended on wild..

Well, technically it can't be used. The heavy shotgun Devil Dog doesn't have a Heavy Pistol. But I don't think anybody would really care.

That's um.... not how Infinity or ITS works at all? There's no requirement to have WYSIWG weapons. :)

The Devil Dog doesn't carry a Chain Rifle or a Heavy Shotgun. The model is supposed to be used as an universal proxy for all Devil Dog loadouts. If people at an ITS event only allow WYSIWYG, then just use the Devil Dog to proxy the other Dogface units in non-ITS tournament games.

Good point. Like you I also agree that no one would bother someone over it.

Sort of.

IIRC you are required to use the official model if one exists. There is a Shotgun Devil Dog and a Chainrifle/Heavy Pistol Devil Dog miniature.

But as Golem2God said, nobody really cares because there are so many figures without official models.

I believe the whole "use the real model if one exists" is in reference to things like unreleased sculpts, where the profile exists but not the model.

So for example, if you want to use a Devil Dog, you have to use either of the 2 Devil dog variants (you can't use a Cameronian, or some 3rd party sculpt). There's no req to use the actual model with the actual weapon of the profile you are using.

I did wonder about all that. I presume they are more likely to fill in missing models than resculpts. Has that been your experience?

I suppose it depends on how one interprets that line of the ITS packet.

As for what CB has done, its a little haphazard from what i can tell.

Sometimes they'll just do a complete resculpt of an older model. Sometimes they'll release a new figure for something that has an old sculpt thats carrying a different weapon(so its sort of both a resulpt and filling in a missing model). And then they'll finally release a sculpt for something that hasn't ever had a model.

From what I can tell, they probably have some sort of official schedule in the pipeline, but everything there takes low priority over someone's random doodle for a cool new figure that they think is the schiz and needs to have a model NAOW!

So basically its Random Cool Figs > Figures the players actually need and want.
