Paint Hard 2: Paint Harder

So yesterday was an impressively attended, well terrained, 4 game, Tagline tournament at @ibuywargames / @Kurrelgyre. Overall I came 11/17, which considering I hadn't played in a long, long time was not too shabby! Although I lost more troops with each game, I managed to win my very last game, and draw game 3 (with 0 objective points each since I was in retreat). 
I was happy to be able to field fully painted lists of Qapu Khalqi:

Game 1 VS JSA - a missile launcher Haramaki team shredded my Djanbazans, although a lucky crit on a 3 from a random hafza vs an appearing shinobu knocked her out of the game. The free Onyx Combined aliens were really good!

Game 2 VS Aleph - First order my HMG died in my active vs a Marut and then my sniper died, got mediced and then the whole place was monofilimented. I pushed the Djans through and all 4 got lucky, then I tried to get rid of another mine wasting orders. In my next turn I had to risk the mine again but this time the doctor and FO hafza got shredded. Scarface got to assault the marut but didn't put her down. Was thorougly outplayed by the sporting Chris P. 

Game 3 VS NCA - I just got annihilated although Scarface did eat 11/12 saves over 2 turns from 4 rockets, and manage to engage a squalo in assault! We drew because none of her troops had achieved objectives and game ended to me only having scarface left. I did try a cheeky disengage to run for the objective but failed the phys roll!

Game 4 VS - Haqqislam - Opponent was fielding a maghariba guard and I was really tired, but Nick(y?) was great and we took it easy. The free Tikbalang did a lot better than Scarface who died to 2 rounds from the his free plasma-sniper xenodron. Only for the fact that I've already got half my NCA already, I'd be thinking to do Onyx next! (Hmmm)

I raided several panopolies. Highlight was the FO Hafza looting an Adhesive launcher and gluing the TAG and the link chipping it down to 0 Structure. The poxy engineer bot fixed it up so I had to possess it with a hacker, running it behind enemy lines to try and toast the engineer - who dodged! The lone Yuan Yuan decided to charge through smoke to hit a now unpossessed tag but failed. The free tikbalang managed to hold the central point and mimetically tank a few HMG rounds so I managed to win although my opponent had killed more stuff than me.

A common theme for me was: being in LoL or retreat. However it was great fun, the scenarios were different and varied than the usual. 

 

So all in all a great day, but long and playing 4 games is very tiring. However none of my games went to time which has been a prior frustration with ITS. Although nothing new has been painted, the whole tournament was a motivating factor for painting up my QK. I have some other stuff to paint for Haqqislam/QK still, however I'm planning to do NCA and plog that thoroughly.

I have several Ghulam, 2 bashi bazooks and scarface to finish off. My GF has expressed an interest in hassassin so i might end up painting a Friday, a lasiq and some muyibs but that's another story.

In terms of NCA: 4 bolt specialists, 4 fusileer specialists, 2 bulleteers, Ulhanz Blix, techbee (proxying for engineer)+ crabbot, Bipandra (proxying DrDeath)

I need to buy: NCA starter, Pan O starter, HMG Aquila 

I'm trying to avoid the older looking sculpts so no auxiliers for me I'm afraid.

I also need to figure out what to do with the tactical junk on the Ulhanz' base.

Tonight I went to the first 'Bournemouth Infinity Gaming' (BIG) at 'Bag of Holding' games, a new FLGS in Bournemouth. We played a custom mission 'Training Day' which was essentially a Limited Insertion 3 Objectives @2 pts each, +2 if more + 2 for most Kills (in points). I played vs Pete, an experienced and friendly player who was running Military Orders with a hospitalier link including HMG, Joan & DeFerson. He was also running a spitfire bulleteer, engineer, TO Order Sgt, techbee & Warcor (both regular due to Joans ability)

My setup was thus (minus the Al'Hawaa):

Overview: Pete got first turn and I got deployment. I exposed a 'djanbazan' (in cover) and made sure my iguana could see the hospitalier link. The rest of my stuff was tucked away and my 'sniper' (Lt Hafza in disguise) camped on top of the high building. I managed to get lucky against his bulleteer with my MSV2 sniper and Janissary putting it to -2 so he couldn't repair it for his objective. In ARO the Hafza Rocket Launcher kept plinking away taking a wound off a HMG hospitalier but the Iguana failed a guts roll and retreated back out of LOS. The knight link was tough to crack even when KO-ed they got healed by the medic. That said Petes luck was worse than mine, I got a few crits off but pete spend 2 command tokens at one point in order to heal up a knight!

Turn 1: My sniper got splatted in Petes' turn 1 as did the rocket Hafza. I foolishly blitzed my Iguana up the field in order to flamethrower 3 knights but I didn't realise that 2 were in total cover so didn't get toasted. The Iguana got disabled for his troubles and ejected. One coordinated order to move lots of people into cover for my last order and I then had to survive more withering fire from the link though my Al'Hawaa managed to Hack the HVT and the Hafza FO managed to light up DeFersons warm corpse. My Djanbazan doctor also healed up the Missile Hafza completing 'Experimental Drug'. I now had to go for kills and preserve the remains of my force.

Turn 2: was quite tough, the Iguana pilot got finished off as did the FO hafza, HMG Djan went down and a TO Order Sgt appeared and tried to hunt my engineer, thankfully she survived and dodged into a building. By the end of Petes turn 2, 3 knights and the Order Sgt went on suppressive fire with a coordinated order. I managed to blow up the HMG hospitalier and superdoc shotgunned the TO Order Sgt. I sometimes think that the more basic Djanbazans do better than the sniper or HMG since they are less of a target! By the end of turn 2 Pete had a hospitalier, Joan and his engineer, techbee & warcor cheerleading squad left. However I was down several key pieces.

Turn 3: Pete really went for the kill in Turn 3, he had 2/3 objectives and opted to go for Secure HVT in leiu of the last one (Test Run, but his bulleteer was beyond repair), my Al'Hawaa was out of good shotgun range so opted to dodge a lone magister which carefully kept out of hacking range (I really wanted to crash WindowsPowerArmour.exe!) who unloaded his multi-rifle. The dodge failed epically so the Al'Hawaa ate 2 shock multi-rifle bullets and died leaving his HVT free from interference. Then Joan went on a crusade! Despite her fervour, it took Pete3 orders with her to kill my engineer due to good shotgun range helping the engineer survive but Joans superior stats and volume of fire managed to eventually fell the poor engineer.  Next on Joans agenda was my doctor in a building who again took a couple of orders to put down but was just knocked unconscious due to being shock immune (yay regen!). Afterwards Joan retreated to secure my HVT.

In my last turn I had only a couple of orders, in a bid to survive I coordinated a regeneration which went well getting the doctor and HMG back up then the  HMG-djanbazan went for revenge and gunned down a wounded magister. With that it was game over! As it stood I had 3 objectives = 6 points and Pete had 3 objectives = 6 points + had killed more than I did +2 points = 8 points so he deservedly won!

Despite his frankly appalling luck at the worst of times -the PanO curse of Dr Death did strike and a magister died from morphine overdose- and lack of experience with link teams (he tells me that he's more of a Vanilla Ariadna man) he did outplay me and deserved the win. Although close, the game was really fun and not overly competitive, we were taking it easy and having a lot of fun.

I was happy to be able to field a TAG as it helps makes up the points in limited insertion, although the limited insertion really limits my ability to field Yuan-Yuans! The Al'Hawaa was a good utility despite not killing anything and the doctor healed 2 people and took out the TO Order Sgt. so was definitely my MVP (again!). My biggest mistake was going to crazy with the Iguana. I'm usually not aggressive enough, or rather am overly aggressive with 'toothless' units so I'm still not sure of what to make of the Iguana! Still it was good to test it out and check out how the Ejection System worked.

Also: HMG Aquila acquired. Trading excess Haqq for required starters = yay! Operation Neo Terra is A-go!

Next time: prep, assembly & painting of NCA!

Today I played my good and excellent friend @turtley_awesome in a custom mission - 3 Hidden Objectives & bonus points for kill points.

He won the WIP roll and chose to go first, I chose the more advantageous side and to deploy second, however thanks to Saladin, I couldn't hold anything back and my opponent held back 2 (an IMP-1 marker and an AP HMG Azra'il)

Simon deployed a couple of camo tokens, a Djanbazan with HMG, Druze hacker, doctor w/DEP, Saladin (prone), Ghulam missile launcher (prone)

Haqqislam Turn 1: Simons' first order was to activate a backline sniper and try to pick off my bolt missile, although a bit of a trap, I decided that the sniper needed to die so I popped my swiss out, thankfully the Bolt killed the sniper outright.

'Bob from accounting' walked over to my Locust who delayed, clearly the finance department were under stress since Bob then attempted to stab the Locust with his stapler! The Locust fought back realising that 'Bob' was actually a Fiday assassin and it took 3 orders worth of fighting before my Locust was killed by the Fiday in a close call.The djanbazan crept out to plink the Swiss guard, who took a wound, failed his guts roll and went prone. Various other elements moved up to the midfield and soon it was my turn.

NCA Turn 1: With the locust down I was a bit concerned at slowing up the advance of the Djan and Azra'il but the prone Fiday itself wasn't much of a threat (yet!). My Aquila strafed out and shot at the Djan who weathered the gunfire but failed his Guys roll and popped back behind his Camoed companion. The aquila pressed his attack nipping into the nearby doorway at which point the Camo marker revealed itself to be an Al'Hawaa hacker who tried to shoot the Aquila. Returning fire the Lt managed to kill the Al'Hawaa with shock ammunition. 

The engineer moved up a little as did the the link team, who were exposed to AROs by the Djanbazan. Despite this I pushed forward with the link team to get into cover. My hacker then hacked the HVT for an objective. Finally my swiss guard moved forward and stood up ready for my opponents 2nd turn and knocking the opposing Missile Ghulam unconscious.

Haqqislam Turn 2: With only a few orders down, Simon wasn't too restricted and Saladin meant he originally had 11 effective orders so the slight dent didn't really slow his forces. The Djan managed to finish off the Swiss guard, if that wasn't bad enough the tide really turned when a Tuareg popped out of TO camo and knocked 2 bolts unconscious!

Conscious of the paramedic nearby the Tuareg expended another order and finished them off with another burst of rifle fire. Between them the Djanbazan and Azra'il proceeded to mangle the rest of the link team although I did chip a wound off the Azra'il. The DEP Doctor tried to move to medic the missile launcher Ghulam who had beed downed but ate a Swiss Missile. That lessened the blow of loosing my most of my link team!

NCA Turn 2: Having only 3 orders + Lt. I wasn't in a great position. With my hacker dead I couldn't data scan an enemy and my engineer would be too exposed to AROs so I killed the Tuareg with the Aquila and then tired to kill off the Djanbazan and Azra'il. The Djan got wounded and I managed to secure the HVT in the process. However my turn was quite short and I left the Swiss Guard standing up, hoping to get a good ARO shot off with his missile launcher.

Haqqislam Turn 3: With a mere *6* orders to endure, my Swiss guard got gunned down by the Azra'il AP HMG going straight to dead due to weight of fire. Ever determined, the Aquila managed to withstand the Azra'ils fire. The Druze was too far back to do anything so the Azra'il tucked back into cover.

NCA  Turn 3: With only 3 orders the Aquila exchanged fire with the Azra'il and thanks to good ranging managed to kill it off! However with no hacker and no way of healing (let alone no orders!) there was little else I could do.

Outcome: With 2 objectives each but having killed less I lost 7-4. It was a great game, thoroughly enjoyable and I was happy to finally use some NCA in the field. I was also happy to test my buildings though a little disappointed that I didn't manage to utilise any drop bears! Simon was trying new stuff too and the Azra'il was certainly a beast of a character to eliminate. Small-ish size and ARM5 meant it was able to take cover easily. 

In hindsight I probably should have put my link team on the left and the Swiss where the Bolt Missile Launcher started, but live and learn!

Nice bases. Painting them in an assembly line style can't be a bad thing. :) Where are they from?

Thanks. It was a bit maddening because it's involved painting but they aren't miniatures!

They're from customeeple. The Angel Giraldez PanO range.

I will probably do a review at some point, they are quite affordable and slightly modular so you can create variety.
