The charm of assassins

29 posts in this topic

Hi guys, in this period I'm playing the campaign Wotan with PanO and I've had my first ITS tournament ( where I won playing MO) but I look for something totally different from my main faction.  I bought a Red Veil to complete my Yu Jing bundle and, having already a base for Haqquislam, I'm thinking about the Assassin's sectorial 'cause really like their playstyle. I've also a solid base for Nomads and, unfortunately I'll have to decide between these two.

What I need is some informations about this sectorial, here's my first idea for a list :

You can take the smoke grenade launcher loadout of the Muyibs. Most players prefer this set-up.

In order to get the needed SWC, You can substitute the ML Ghulam for a sniper, for example.

You need some orders for the 2nd group. The Daylami will want to use coordinated orders and if you have a good chance, a Mutt should have maybe 2 regulars in addition to his 2 normal orders. Ayyar loves to start in the second group when you have Djabel. Then on 2nd turn when Djabel is dead, he can move over to 1st group. 1st turn you won't have many orders for Ayyar anyways in this kind of list, as Djabel takes quite a few and then both fireteams take some as well, he is there for turn 2 and 3 objectives/killing. My suggestion would be some cheap REMs for orders.

Here is my suggestion personally. Its built off @Orthas list with some minor tweaks. While I love Daylami, its a lot of points tied up in something thats a single shot speed bump. Ghazi provide more utility and annoyance to the enemy and are generally more reliable. I dropped the Minelayer for a Grenade Launcher Muyib as well. It would be nice to drop the Daylami for more regular orders for the Ayyar for first turn but 3 Daylami can do some work as well.

Daylami are much more than a single shot speedbump. One third of them are in your enemies face, shooting very potent shotgun templates in addition to fausts. They have superb alpha-strike capability. And the often discussed coordinated faust trick is awesome, which is why I usually take 0, 2 or at least 4 (chance of all failing roll at 4 starts to drop quite nicely). You can cover surprising ground to get to do the coordinated, with only 1 regular and token you can move all your Daylami 12" and shoot. That means all of them can probably see annoying enemy overwatcher who must die. And after all that they drop to being annoying speedbump.

Of course the second list is very solid, I usually struggle most with anti-TAG if I have no Daylami, but double ML fireteam is very nice substitute.

Thanks for your suggesstions, now you made me all the more sure now.

Can you give me a quick primer on this sectorial? I saw that the dedicated topic is quite dated.

What kind of information you want? Hassassins have some rare and interesting units (Muttawiah, Fiday&Djabel, Daylami) as well as other good units (Lasiq, Ragik). My view is that while many of those are better in Vanilla Haqq on their own, if I want to run them and a Fireteam, I play Hassassins. And most often I do want to run a Fireteam, unless I want to run also something else not available (like a TAG, or bikes, or ARM5 Fasid/Azrail).

Well, dont's depend on technological advantage, because outside of Viral Ammo, Hassassins have little flashy tech.

You have solid Core Fireteams (Muyibs, Govads - also, Ghilim, if you want to go cheap), you have aggressive Haris Teams (primarily various Asawira / Muyib compositions), you have competent drop troops (Ragik) and Camo Infiltrators (Farzan), you have the Ghazi Muttawi'ah, considered by some to be the most destructive Warband in the entire game, you have nice long-range options (Lasiq, some of the Ayyar variants), you have good hackers (Barid, primarily). Yuo get Fidays, who are rightly feared for their ability to disrupt enemy plans by killing essential pieces (but beware, Fidays are glass hammers).

You get only the basic complement of REMs, but that's hardly a surprise in a Haqq sectorial.

You don't get any TAGs (outside of Scarface, and likely only while the TAGline event lasts). No ARM better that 3 - both HI choices are on the lightweight side of HI. No MSV L2+.

You trade up. That's the gist of Hassassins. Be prepared to lose good models, while making those losses count. There are very few models I want to keep safe really. Daylami, Mutts, Fiday, Ragik, Muyibs are all made to go out there and die. This is very different from some other factions, where you can reliably win fights without tricks and keep your troops in safe positions.

Make sure to balance Irregular orders with enough regulars to be able to both achieve stuff like normal factions (at least 8 regulars in main group) and still have some regulars for your Irregulars to utilize. The Irregulars are much more powerful than their point cost suggests. I like around 14-18 orders with Hassassins (not counting Impetous).

You are very good at disrupting enemy game plan. Keep the scenario objective in mind. For example if enemy has only few specialists, you can hit them hard with and make it impossible for him to score (while taking some losses yourself). Similarly you can easily eliminate potential enemy Rambos, or wipe their hidden order-base.

Thanks for so many informations;)

Yesterday I played my first two matches with this interesting sectorial army, the first against Tohaa and the second against Military Order.

Well, I won both matches, the first pretty easily, the second was a bit more difficult, HIs linked are hard to face and PanO BS is always devastating, fortunately I was able to isolate many of them. I played this list :

@ list build - I'd swap one Daylami for a 8pts Kameel REM. Your Group #2 is short on Regular orders IMO.

@ Hassassin weaknesses, in my eyes:

  • they have problems dealing with visual modifiers. MSV L1 (Govads, easily set up as a long-range firepower) is the best you can  hope for, so Camo, TO Camo, ODD, Mimetism, low-vis zones are going to hurt.
  • they lack typical heavy models. No TAGs, no S5 Heavy Infantry, even basic (ARM 4, Core Fireteam-capable) HI, combat REMs typical to some Human factions are all absent.  No ARM above 3, no Wounds above 2. So not much in terms of staying power. I've said it before: glass hammer.

Still, both these problems can be worked around:

  • use Direct Template weapons and Close Combat. Smoke grenades are readily available, too (of course, not really any good against MSV L2+, but one can't have everything). Also, you can have up to 2 Rafiq sensorbots, and they're as close to assault remotes as existing Haqq choices are (hint: Light Shotgun blasts  at close range with Marksmanship L2 tend to reduce entire Fireteams into fertilizer...). Govad MSV L1s can help you leveling the field a bit, too.
  • Asawira with their W2 and Regeneration can withstand a lot of damage (though, of course, they're better off if there is a Doc backing them up). The firepower of Hassassins is okay (there are plentiful HMGs, Spitfires, Missile and Rocket Launchers, Sniper Rifles etc etc), and it is held by competent shooters. It is the staying power we lack.  Some troops can go an extra mile turning Dogged - every time one of them falls Unconscious, consider if you're going to come and heal them, or it is better to have their death count for something. As it was mentioned already - trade up: "I may fall, but I'll take you down with me"-attitude. Also, there's the Shaytaniah REM, your off-the-mill Smart Missile bot. Not very expensive, but a piece your opponent can't ignore - and it provides very nice long-range ARO.
  • that's a general advice, not Hassassin specific, but after your enemy is deployed, take a while to analyse what has he put on the table, and where (also, what he did'n, i.e. is potentially in AD or Hidden Deployment). Then, consider what are his key pieces and how you could neutralise them (killing is preferred, but Immobilising, Isolating, or simply putting enough AROs around them to keep their heads down does work too). Neutralising the key models is going to disrupt your opponent's battle plan, forcing him to switch to alternative solutions and improvising. Not to mention, you're going to have it much easier from then.

Important news, I tested my last list today, against Combined Army & Tohaa ( one day I'll be able to use Impersation-2 with my Al-Dja), two fantastic victories, I'm really enthusiast about this sectorial, I like its playstyle, it's really devastating !

Having 3 regular orders in the second group helped me a lot, I was able to do 2 or 3 coordinate orders in my first turn and, compared to the first two games, now  I've more connection with some units, the warbands now work better and two ML and the Lasiq gave me a great firepower, especially in ARO. The two Farzans allow me to cover better the flanks, their mines are gold, the only model I never fully tested yet is my favourite miniature, the Ayyar, but 'cause there was no need for its intervention XD.

Rather than start a new thread, figured I'd build on this one. I've played some Hassassins in the past and I'm concerned that my ideal list is pretty much identical to what was posted at the very start of this thread. Does Hassassins have any other effective lines of play or is it just order bunker, muibs, piece trade?

Likewise, most of the good stuff I'm seeing can be taken in Haqqislam just as easily, and there it can be mixed in with other effective trading pieces (bikes) and the versatility of support options there. Outside of links, does Hassassins get any other advantage to leverage over the vanilla faction?

I play them differently myself, and I wouldn't personally take that list as that much chaff gets a bit dull to use IMO. I prefer a more classic varied Group One with Group Two basically being support. The Fiday and Ayyar are great solo attack guys, the Haris is my assault team, the Ghulams are my line holders, the Farzan is there to hide incase of LoL or can grab an objective, which the Rafiq is also there for. Mutts are just skirmish screen.

Yeah, I have to say my lists look nothing like the first list. I'll generally have a Core link of Muyibs or Govads, backed up by the Asawira Haris (which usually has a Muyib Doctor and Leila), then sprinkled in various other tools like Barid Killer hackers and Ghazi. I don't use my Ghazi as the usual piece trading 'moving mines' and smoke template generators, but take 1-2 of them and tend to use Regular orders to give them some extra reach. I've found a well placed Ghazi can be devastating with a nice E/Marat target, and on the flanks out of LoS their Jammer is good at halting rushes when you can suddenly turn and enemy model Isolated.

I do understand the 'asymmetrical trade' game play style, it's just not a game play style I enjoy so I don't do it.

@Solar

Do I understand it correctly that you link Husam with Asawira and Muyib? It looks like that from the layout, but I'm pretty sure it's not legal.

@Solar : personally I really like your list, the haris with Yasbir is something I didn't consider, you play many less orders than me and you don't play many warbands, a different approach but I approve, it's really interesting and I want to try it but for now, I find myself better with mine 'cause it plays in a completely different way than my other armies.

Till now, I played just 5 matches and my last creation is the one who behaved better, my last was against Military Order, for now, for me, this is the most complicated army to deal with, I still have a long way to go but I think this sectorial army has a lot of versatility and there are many combinations I have to try.

Glad you like it! I think that generally speaking I prefer multi-capable mixed forces which, while Haqq is perfectly capable of doing them, I often see a focus on numbers over quality in their forces, which isn't so much a mistake as I feel it's play style that doesn't match mine.

Note that not every Husam counts as Muyib.

Only a Muyib-based Husam, or a character Husam specifically listed as such (luckily, both Yasbir and Laila Sharif are).

This is a clarification that becomes necessary once you want to field a Husam SpecOps, which can be based on any of the 3 troops available to Haqqislam (Ghulam, Hafza or Muyib) regardless of which exact sectoral you field him in. Thus, a Ghulam Husam will be able to link with Ghilim, and Hafza will be able to link with no-one (as there are no Hafzas available in HB under normal circumstances, and Hafza's "fireteam superglue" ability is exclusive to QK lists).

You are right, should've addressed him as Yasbir specifically.

I played only one tournament with Hassassins, but I used Ayyar few times and if I had one thing to add about the last army list - I'd put Ayyar in the second group, to mess with the enemy a bit more ;) Hide him as a three soft units, covering the deployment zone, like Daylami light shotgun. Then you have 9 units in first group and the enemy can think that you have some Ragik.

And if enemy has the first turn, you can use the Ayyar/Daylami to really cover your deployment, having the real one in a good position to ARO in nice ranges.

And if you start, then you can take him into the first group thanks to his Free Agent rule. It;s too nice to waste it ;)
