Nomads and 10 order lists

21 posts in this topic

So 10 order lists look to be all the rage in ITS9.

I've never been successful using only 10 orders and I believe they will always be at a disadvantage compared to lists with 16 plus orders (even with the new resistance to having your orders stripped in first turn).

But they do seem to work for some people and for the benefit of science I want to try to improve with them.

I have a few musings on the subject...

-10 order lists seem to always struggle in missions where there are multiple objectives to complete (like the grid for example) because even without taking casualties they will struggle to have enough orders to do anything. They seem better suited to killing missions or missions with simple objectives like capture and protect or frontline.

-10 order lists are better if you have super-elite units that are tough and killy-like PanO or Aleph. Other armies like Nomads don't have these units and instead rely on units working together to achieve the same goals (eg. Jaguar lays down smoke for Intruder to shoot target, Hellcat drops in and places repeater for Interventor to hack HI, or Interventor sets up white noise for TR Bot to shoot Nisse). This sort of thing generally takes more orders to do and lends itself to higher order lists.

-10 order lists struggle with board control because A) you don't have enough stuff to be everywhere and B) risking units for AROs is a harder call to make because you can't afford to loose orders.

-10 order lists like the first turn because it is very easy for them to be gimped by a good alpha strike that strips several orders. I've found Nomads already don't like being alpha struck because we are so fragile and this makes it worse for us. Taking the first turn can also put you at a disadvantage in some missions meaning you often have an uphill battle.

What are your thoughts on this? Are these concerns valid or am I being weak and cowardly.

Also, How would you make a good 10 order list for Nomads and what would your strategy be with it?

I'll post my own 10 order list in a bit for critique.

1) Mission High Clasified. My first opponent played Haqqislam unit spam (18+ orders)
10 orders are low on performing all classified missions and stop all suiciders with jamers.

2)Mission Suplies. The opponent plays Japs (10 oder list with Tag, evil REM(spitfire with MSV2, Marksmen L2 program) and many ninjas) and has a good knowledge of Nomads  (at my deploy he knew what exactly the cammo marker would be). I failed to stop his TAG(cleansed my mines field with crazy koalas) and that REM have target practic day.

3)Mission Safe Area. Against Morrat Aggression Force. Friendly play on the last table with beer. My dice played another game (probably DnD because the number of natural 20 was high) and the opponent wanted to clean the table than to play a mission.

The final verdict: 10 of the order is low for nomads of at least 14+ orders.

It's important to remember that if a 10 order list was succesful you should still do worse than normal on your first few (multiple) games. Don't expect to play a different style and lose nothing.

I think it's tough for a list like Nomads, whose strength is in mutual unit support and versatility.  Even something as simple as "throw smoke for an intruder, let intruder shoot, doctor the intruder if he takes a hit" is extremely taxing for a 10-order list compared to a 15+ order list.  The same is true for other fundamental Nomad staples... "Lob a pitcher, Hack a target" or "move a repeater, drop some white noise" are basic support roles that have a potent in-game impact but all require different units to work in tandem with one another.

Ramboing around with stompy, killy units is getting easier and easier now that Nomads have more in the way of killing beatstick units (I expect a glut of Szalamandra lists coming up), but I always felt the great strength of Nomads lay elsewhere.

I have to agree with this, even if I generally think 10 order lists are okay. The more your faction leans on cheap troops or support, the harder it is to make due with 10 orders.

Corrigidor imo needs to field a lot of dudes, vanilla and bakunin maybe less so.

Whereas when i play aleph, achillies can just go around spending his orders on murder without any extra support.

Nomads with the likes of the Kriza, and to a lesser extent swast, are getting better at it though.

I agree with you and Nate and for that reason I'm glad limited insertion is basically dead letting armies like us and Haqq choose to limit our orders rather than being forced to. Playing 10 orders really does feel like you are gimping yourself sometimes.

In hindsight, I can see a few things wrong with it - Maybe having hidden deployment and an airbourne deployment leaves too few orders, and also the Intruder LT should probably be a normal intruder with HMG or sniper and the LT switch to something else (maybe the Kriza).

Well... there are lots of working nomads lists with only 10 orders. Just a few examples:

- Corregidor: MB Pain train

- Bakunin: Full Riot Grrls + Taskmasters

- Vanilla: Kriza + Multiple Spektrs + Intruders

I think there is plenty of lists you can run and are effective - learning to play a 10 man list just needs a new approach as it is something you may not be use to. Remember "it's not the list....it is you!". 10man list you can not take all your tricks, therefore PLAY THE MISSION :D

Try thinking of it as 5 aggressive orders 3 defensive orders and 2 orders to fix your mistakes, most missions do not require you to move past the center of the board and a lot also require you to simply score in round 3.

I have had a lot of fun and success with the following lists and prefer 10man lists, now that we don't get 2 orders stripped has made it worth it taking them.

I can attest to this. Ran something similar but with Bran and a lone saluyt tr bot in Supremacy yesterday and got a solid win.  We have a limited insertion tournament coming up.

I had some moderate success with this 10 order camo list in a recent tournament.  It worked well in firefight and frontline but not as well in supplies:

OK, OK, so it's only 9 camo tokens, but I wanted smoke for my Intruder and I needed an actual model on the table for a datatracker.

10-order lists have to be really efficient in one way or another. If they can put their high-quality units in the right place, they achieve a great concentration of force. That means some combo of powerful linkteams, deployment advantage (infiltration, AD, etc.), and efficient use of coordinated orders.

On the reactive turn they need to also be efficient, so board control units that aren't sitting ducks are vital.

Nomads are really good at both these things. Thus I simply don't buy that we are in any way gimped in 10-order lists or the Limited Insertion format.

The maxi-camo, maxi-infiltrator lists people are posting are classic Nomads: No one does that as well as we do. We can be up there dropping 3-4 mines with a single coordinated order, or doing the same with koalas. We can hack better than anyone, coordinated if we like. And our forward units include Morans, who have not only widely-spaced board control through normal damage (koalas, which compared to mines are amazing and you get 2 deployed from the get-go), but also a repeater. Any army that has access to 2 of those guys in vanilla cannot complain about cost-efficiency at all. They also specifically counter other high-quality units very well.

Regarding links, Riot Grrls are the hands-down best HI link in the game, IMO. They not only put out great offensive power, their visors, Hyperdynamics, and Tinbot let them defend against almost any tool opponents would use to take down a linkteam easily. Thus the risk of exposing them for ARO is actually worth it, making them one of the best board-control links out there. All of that for an insanely low price because they would have Frenzy if they weren't a link (which is a failing of the Infinity pricing system, but that's beside the point).

Brigada are not as great a value, but you can get a Haris that covers the Brigada's weaknesses well (Massacre and Jaguars), plus AD or infiltrating specialists. Pretty hard-ass list for facepunching, per Corregidor standard.

When Tunguska finally comes out, you can definitely bet their hacking and high-quality REM/TAG units are going to make them nasty and resilient too.

Since they actually have DTW they aren't even that weak in that way, compared to Grrls. Also not as weak to Hacking, Grrls are very vulnerable. Opposed to fluff the main strength of Grrls is for a ML link.

Also not as weak to Hacking, Grrls are very vulnerable.

Wait, what? Grrls get Tinbot B too, and have the same BTS as the Brigada (BTS 3). The Brigada's hacker only gets to counterattack if the other guys in the link aren't doing Reset too, so it's limited in defensive ability. Grrls don't strike me as that vulnerable to hacking. And I say this as someone who has tried to hack them a few times and only occasionally been successful (usually when they don't resist, or I caught them on their second skill with a TO hacker).

Since they actually have DTW they aren't even that weak in that way, compared to Grrls.

I meant CC and other warbands with chainrifles, mainly- Grrls are actually better at avoiding those due to their damned Hyperdynamics. Jaguars with Massacre are great for close-in work. I really, really love getting to use Eclipse grenades to close with an opponent who thinks they've got an unassailable position for their link, or an MSV3 guy on Suppressive Fire, or the like.

@Savnock in practice, the ability to shoot troops with the LFT or hack enemies reduces, not eliminates, those problems.

Most hacking, especially vs. HI hacking, is done in the reactive in my experience. Getting Grrls caught in a repeater requires the link to deal with it, they can't keep firing from that position, where the Brigada have options.

With no DTW a fragile unit with something like a BSG can keep hitting the link as long as it wins the F2F.

But yeah I like Massacre Haris with the Brigada.

Don't get me wrong, Grrls are better. They're the best. Any weakness they could have were eliminated with MSV1, Hyperdynamics, Missile launcher, Specialist Op and Tinbot. I'm half surprised they didnt get a Pulzar+Koala profile and a KHD. But Brigada have some advantages, especially ones that play out as you build the rest of the list.
