I impulse bought the USAriadna starter box

11 posts in this topic

Hey guys. I randomly bought the USAriadna starter box and am painting them up. I’m giving some thought to turning it into a small force to play low point battles and try to get back into the game.

My intention is to have a damn good looking army and not get humiliated in friendly games at my local nerd shop.

What have people found to be good additions to the starter? Is it recommended for a newbie to go sectorial or vanilla?

If it helps, I sure do love that Blackjack model, hot damn that’s a sexy piece of metal.

@theycallhimben A BlackJack would be a good choice for your growing force. That T2 Sniper Rifle is not something for the opponent to allow free reign on the battle field. A Dozer & 112 (firefighter) are two more future pick-ups due to them being Ariadna's Doc & Engineer units. Next would be more Foxtrots. The Boarding Shotgun is a great killing loadout while grabbing another starter Foxtrot will give you another FO specialist. You can grab another USAriadna starter to give you more of the Rifle loadouts for Grunts, Marauders, Minutemen & Foxtrots. This will help with building linkteams or having more specialists in a list.

As for a link you can go for either of the sectorial's choices (Grunts, Minutemen, Marauders). Each one can be used in lower point games thought the Grunts are the cheapest option. If you need any ideas of how to run USAriadna & advice concerning them you should check out The Dice Abide which has a huge selection of tactical knowhow on them. Read all of Adam's articles and see which units you want to try out or pick up.

As for right now I'll post a few 150/200 point lists using the units I mentioned above.

Blackjacks are awesome, but you will get more bang for your buck out of a box of Grunts and Marauders after the starter. If you are thinking blister packs then Van Zant is almost a must, 112 are quite nice, as is getting another foxtrot (like the shotgun).

I mostly agree with more or less everything @Golem2God and @TheDiceAbide wrote. Just a few additional comments:

The recent changes to ITS misisons made engineers (Dozer in Your case) less appealing a choice, but being hit by adhesive ammunition is pretty much a headache if You... well... forgot to bring an engineer.

In case You do bring an engineer You should consider bringing a couple of FO Foxtrot and Katyusha. Check out the guided trait and understand how exactly It works!

I recommend taking a look at the fireteam options and pick the one that You like most (aesthetics, stats, whatever) and buy the box You prefer. Friendly warning: chances are pretty high, You will sooner or later (most likely sooner) buy them all...

Marauder box for sure. IMO the Marauder link is the main reason to play US, over say, Vanilla Ariadna. The Grunt box isn't going to hurt if you choose to go in that direction.

112, Dozer+Muls, and at least one other Foxtrot would be wise.

From the USARF Army Pack I went for:

Airborne Ranger with SMG

Dozer with Traktor Mul Control

Traktor Muls

2x Grunt boxes

Marauder box

Minuteman box

Unknown Ranger(GenCon variant)

Only recently acquired a Van Zant (I only wanted the GenCon variant--a friend of mine sent it to me as a birthday gift since he was never going to do anything with it)

An Intel Grunt is not a bad idea to nab but not necessary. I've got a Blackjack on order from The Warstore and I'm thinking about some more Mavericks or another Marauder+Minuteman box each.

You want to use it for low point battle, so your buying choice will have to reflect that.

I would advice first the grunt box (you can proxy a second sniper grunt using the LRL grunt, the HMG one can give your grunt fireteam some offensive power in low point game)

Hardcase are formidable speed bump for a low cost so I would advice at least one

Camo infiltrator is one of ariadna's selling point. You will want more than the one in the starter box. I will advice buying a boarding shotgun one + another one (the sniper) and use it as a second FO foxtrot.

Add dozer and 112 for cheap specialist/order filler

That will give you a cheap base with cheap order, speed bump (hadcase, grunt infiltred), specialist (foxtrot FO) and and cheap strike piece (foxtrot BS). You will then need to complete with heavier piece (blackjack, marauder, minutemen) as adviced above

I'm not a fan of the mul in USAriadna, but it's more a question of personnal taste so take it too

Well, the only thing I've to say is that you chose wisely, despite your impulse XD, USAriadna is, in my opinion, an amazing army, I really like its miniatures and maybe in the future I'll start it, don't limit yourself and expand your army till 300 points ;).

More or less yes. The 150pts list check all the boxes : 10 orders, specialist for objectives, offensive and defensive pieces

In the 200 pts, I would change the group a little. Like this your blackjack is order starved. Maybe moving a pair of regulars orders to group 2 or exchange the blackjack with someone from group 2. After trying this list a few time, you should start experimenting with marauder/minutement fireteams to see how they fits with your playstyle.

Sniper Blackjack's aren't really active turn pieces. They're perfectly fine spending the 1-2 orders in the secondary pool, if that. They're there to be a big reactive gun.
