New to QK and want to run HI skew

8 posts in this topic

Hello! Im relatively new to both Infinity and Qapu Khalqi though not wargaming in general. I was a little leery of the expense of starting another war game at first until some friends who play brib- gifted me the Haqq starter box and Saladin after showing some interest in Haqqislam. While I love all the themes and models of Haqqislam, what really drew me in were the Heavy Infantry, especially the Jannissaries, Azrail and Al Fhaseed. So with one eye fixed on eventually participating in the regular ITS tournaments, I'm determined at least one of my two lists be a HI skew featuring a Jannissary link and (if I can sneak him in) an Azrail. As money is a little tight for me at the moment, this list and these models will be used for a good while so I thought it best to run the idea by you fine people to help me avoid any trap or niche models that may not have the best synergy with running an HI skew.

After several games of kill-em-all and HVT, I feel I have a solid grasp of the basics and drafted this as a potential list to buy.

Basic idea is that the Jannissary link is the aggressive pusher, Sekban duo is an ARO piece/button pusher, Azrail will be parked somewhere with a good firelane to hold down and a nasmat nearby to pick him up and the Hafza lieutenant will likely disguise as a Djanbazan with a scary ARO weapon. Im not sold on the Mobile Brigada (faction purity aside, hes a tad expensive and not very killy for his cost) but he fits the theme of the list and is a tough as nails specialist with Fairy Dust.

Is the list missing something critical that limits its ITS viability? Did I overlook some models with better synergy in favor of theme? Am I blowing too many points on overcosted HI? Let me know what you all think.

You're mostly fine there. Except for that Nasmat: with both your doctors being parts of their respective Fireteams (Janissary Core and Sekban Duo), it has nobody to operate it (A Doc / Engineer can't have a G:Servant REM attached, if he's to be a member of a Fireteam).

Now, that's not the HI QK list I play (mine has a full-blown Janissary Core, a Sekban Haris with HRL, an al'Hawwa Hacker and a Shihab REM, if memory serves me), but definitely an interesting take on the idea.

Keep in mind though that with the money being an issue, you're running into a couple of problematic choices here. You definitely should have models to represent the Core - both actual Janissaries and Hafzas (as themselves, and as the Janissaries they're pretending to be). The Mobile Brigada Hacker is available only as a part of the Brigada box set.  I'm not sure if the Hafzas are available outside of the QK Starter Pack anymore (and then, it is 2 riflemen and the Spitfire, but heck, WYSIWYG isn't rigorously observed in most Infinity communities I've heard about). The Nasmat (which, as I've mentioned, is of little use in this list) can be obtained in the Haqq Support Pack only.

Therefore, I'd suggest hunting for some used models.

Best suggestion I can make: for now, proxy whatever you lack with whatever you have (just make sure your opponent is aware of what is what). Playtest this list a few times. Tweak with it. Once you get one you think does work as intended, buy the actual models. Heck, I had a player here who was unwilling to put money into models (he burned himself on another game that died out - and he had a pile of expensive models let with nobody to play against), so he proxied with 40k models and what-not. For almost two years. Then he decided to buy actual infinity minis :)

Welcome to the game!

Regarding the list there is a problem with Nasmat. Namely You cannot attach a Nasmat to a trooper that is part of the fireteam. That means if You can't run the Sekbans as a fireteam-duo. I would include a lone doctor in the list. Perhaps You could exchange the Mobile Brigada for Janissary doctor.

Keep in mind, You can attach more than one Nasmat to a doctor (although You can only activate one of the attached Nasmats with an order). In case You bring two Nasmat and a doctor, the doc will be effectively at three oplaces at the same time. Not a bad idea, I can assure You.

Looking at the list You will sorely miss a killer hacking device. Your list is vulnerable to hacking. Consequently a trooper that is able to deal with enemy hackers is a very nice to have thing. Too bad Your list is missing repeater coverage. Enter Leila Shariff. She is fairly cheap, can put on Cybermask, push buttons (when needed), hunt enemy hackers (with her KHD) and other relatively squishy enemy troopers with her shock marksman rifle.

I cooked up a list that is fairly similar to Yours. Please, take a look at this for inspiartion:

Everyone knows the ninja do not exist. The official Yu Jing Government's statements deny their existence as well.

However no-one, including the Hachib's Presidential Office, denies the existence of the Hassassin

The Old Man of the Mountain sends his kindest regards...

Thanks for the replies!

Thats a bit unfortunate with the Brigada packaging but hopefully I can find someone looking to get rid of their hacker brigada online if he makes the final cut. I thought I saw a box of three hafza available unless its a discontinued set.

As for the Nasmat, I was under the impression it could be given to a doctor in a link but would break the link and require a command token to reform so was really for emergencies. I originally had the list without it though if its not worth the cost. Dropped the Nasmat and downgrade the Azrail to Feurbach so that the vanilla AP rifle Jannissary can afford his M.D. and become a second doctor.

This looks very interesting, I'll have to give it a try this weekend. I agree on the Killer hacker but wasnt sure how to squeeze her in. In this list, is the HRL hafza hanging back for ARO or part of the Jan link for +3 BS and +1 Burst? Hafza lieutenant in the Jan link seems dangerous.

Well, I'd say the Brigada HMG is na useful option for the QK, too. IMO a solo Brigada HMG is a better choice than solo Janissary HMG.

So, that's half of the box... but since we assume you're ona budget, I'll shelve the Brigadas for later purchase.

There was no "3 Hafza box" as such. Never-ever. Back in the day, there were two blister packs: 2 Hafza Riflemen in one, and a lone Hafza Spitfire in the other. At some point those 3 models have been included into the QK Starter Box (along with the old Djanbazan Snpier, Odalisque Spitfire and, if memory serves me, al'Hawwa Hacker). I'm not sure about current status of the Hafza blister packs. Hafza HRL is an N3-added profile, and has not yet been released as a model.

The "Nasmat in a link" interpretation was true - for a time - back in 2ed. Nowadays you simply aren't allowed to have a G:Servant attached to a model that is in a Link (since that would mean the G:Servant is, effectively, in the Fireteam, and thats not allowed). My answer to the problem is:

  • either have the Doc in the team (especially advisable, if it is a team you intend to advance aggressively upfield), or
  • have Doc (out of any team) in your Deployment Zone (preferably close to a defensively deployed Fireteam / solo models)  and use the Nasmat to get to your wounded upfield.

In case You disguise both Hafzas as a 36-points Janissary, Your opponent will have to guess which of the three identically looking trooper is an AP-rifle wielding Janissar, a Hafza Lt and potentially a HRL Hafza. I can assure You, Your opponent will  NOT want to mess with the first and the last one. Chances are pretty high Your opponent will not bother hunting Your Lt. I firmly believe the Lt is best placed in a Janissary link than going solo.

The Lt Should definitely be in the fireteam. Which of the other two (FO or HRL) Hafzas to include in the linkteam is totally up to You. A lone HRL Hafza is a nice ARO piece, a lone FO can go after objectives. You can disguise any of them as a heavy hitter or a weakish specialist.

It's mind games times!

Difficult choices. All Yours!

Indeed, QK has a very "flexible" list style, where you rarely want to form a concrete plan for each of your holo troopers before the game, but rather adapt for each opponent/board/mission etc. The more you change up your approach, the harder it is for your opponent to predict what goes where and why. I think that's why the most successful builds I've come up with for them have multiple different ways of forming the links and/or multiple possible holo/real models to keep opponents guessing.
